One of only 322 Masters of Wine worldwide and one of 21 Australian Masters of Wine, Dr Georgiou has been described as the wine industry’s very own Superman: a Dentist by day, a Master of Wine by night! While these two careers conventionally seem unsuited, Georgiou uses such contrasts and out of the ordinary business concepts as the hallmark of his success.
Georgiou continues to work in and run his own successful dental practice today. And as a result of his passion for wine, he embarked on pursuing the prestigious Master of Wine qualification back in 2000 and hasn’t looked back since.
Over the last 14 years Dr Georgiou has worked around the globe with luxury hotels, airlines, retail and corporate clients among many others. He has worked with a number of high profile chefs including Gordon Ramsay, developing award winning programs and wine cellars here in Australia and overseas, including the Glass Bistro in Sydney and the world’s first underwater cellar in the Conrad Resort and Spa Maldives.
The aim of the Institute of Masters of Wine is to promote the highest level of educational achievement for the wine industry, culminating in the internationally recognised qualification of Master of Wine (MW). The IMW pursues the goal of excellence in the wine industry and aims to promote the highest quality of wine, highest standards of excellence and conduct in the wine industry.
The Institute owes its origin to the Vintners' Company, one of the Twelve Great City of London Livery Companies which received its first Charter in 1363, and to the Wine and Spirit Association.
Soon after the Second World War these two organisations recognised that they needed to improve the standard of education in the British wine trade and to formally certify its most talented members. They organised an examination process for the trade known as the Master of Wine examination, which was held for the first time in 1953. In 1955, the Institute of Masters of Wine was formed by the people who had passed the inaugural exam.
Today the Institute is independent of both, although the Vintners' Company remains an important supporter. The Institute continues to hold many of its events throughout the year in Vintners' Hall in the City of London, including the Annual General Meeting, the Awards Ceremony and a number of tastings.
